It took 5 years, but Tubby Fats coached the North Texas Mean Green to their first National Championship, after losing 21-20 to Miami, FL in the BCS Championship the year before.

I decided to take a HC job at another 1 star school, Duke….and these two guys followed me as transfers! That QB rivals my guy from UTSA. Sorry for the blurry pic.

After leading North Texas to the National Championship, Head Coach Tubby Fats moved on to 1 star Duke to try and build that program into a championship contender. That process was amazingly quick. In year 1, the Blue Devils went 13-1 and beat Florida 30-10 in the Orange Bowl. Only an ACC Championship game loss to Clemson kept Duke from playing for the National Championship.

Year 2 was a story of complete dominance as Duke went 14-0, beating Texas 31-24 on a very late 4th quarter TD run by Heisman winning QB Mike Rodgers to win the National Championship!

Rodgers totally dominated on the field posting 4,441 yards passing 40 TD passes, and added 1,628 yards on the ground with another 28 rushing TDs.

Not surprisingly, Head Coach Tubby Fats bolted the Blue Devils for a new challenge, this time he heads to Mizzou, who after a 1-11 season dropped to 1 star status themselves.
